After fiddling around and searching the internet I found a solution to Mac OS X 10.6 crashing my Windows 7 x64 computers

fix:

  1. Disable IPV6 in OS X
  2. Change the domain name to your workgroup name in both OS X and your router
  3. install Windows 7 patch kb981180
Steps 1 and 2 allowed my computer to see each other on the network. step 6 solved the problems for me.
Edit: After a week to testing on multiple computer the problem does indeed appear to be fixed.
